Kindergarten/First Grade Team Teaching Loop

Our kindergarten class works as one team. Mrs. Gariboldi is the lead math/science teacher and Mrs. Parker is the lead literacy teacher. We both have a passion for working with young children and creating an environment that encourages cooperation. It is our goal to have children become life long learners!

November 26

What a great comfy cozy day! We played a turkey math game, made thank you cards for our buddies, listened to Thanksgiving stories, had centers, guidance and we watched a special video. We had a wonderful party of thanks for our 5th grade buddies. They helped us make thankful pumpkins that are really awesome! You should ask your child to see it. We are sure they would make great center pieces at any family dinner! We really appreciate our buddies so much! We would like to thank all of you for supporting this party and helping with treats and supplies! Below are some pictures from day:

ECO

We had an amazing day in the forest yesterday! Our theme was Thanksgiving. We cooked bread and apples over the fire.

We sang a song to give thanks to the forest and worked with partners to create designs to show our thanks!

Thank you for all the offers for food and drink for our Thanksgiving breakfast with our buddies. At this point we are still in need of pumpkin bread or muffins. We have about 65 kiddos in the two grades. If you would be willing to send in a dozen muffins, we would appreciate it! Please let us know. Thanks.

November 19

Today the students worked on drawing a map of their classroom. They noticed shapes, doors, tables, and spacing. They will be making a book of their drawings to see the change over time. They seemed very excited! The mammals started this project today, birds will start on Thursday.

We have ECO tomorrow! The weather looks chilly so please make sure your child is dressed for the conditions!

We are going to have a Thanksgiving celebration with our 5th grade buddies on Tuesday November 26th. We would really like the kindergarten students to learn about being a great host/hostess. They will learn about serving guests first, using polite language and just enjoying each others company! We are asking for parents to help prepare for this celebration. We need pumpkin muffins, corn bread, cider or juice, napkins, plates and cups. If you are willing to help us up, please let us know ASAP. Thank you so much!

November 15, 2013

Today the students had their first RIF (reading is fundamental ) book give away! Each student picked out a book to take home and to keep! Very exciting!

Our student teacher, Vanessa Powers, is starting her solo teaching in Lisa's room. She will be teaching the students math and a unit on mapping and construction. She will be guiding children throughout the day using all of her awesome skills! Lisa will spend more time in literacy to help the children with writing while giving Vanessa more "alone" time with the children during her solo weeks.

Enjoy the weekend! It looks like it is going to be a beautiful one!

ECO and play

We have had a wonderful couple of days in kindergarten. Yesterday we enjoyed a brisk day in the forest. The kiddos did a great job taking care of themselves. We had learned about fire safety and stayed warm by the fire.

We also visited our mouse houses and looked for evidence that mice had visited them. Many children were excited to share what they found!

We also enjoyed a warm cup of tea by the fire and made clay mice.

Today we went to the Chandler to see Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No good, Very Bad Day. EMES should be very proud of our kindergarten and first graders for excellent audience behavior!

We have ECO tomorrow, November 13th. Please be sure your child comes with snow pants, hat, mittens, water bottle and extra snack.

Here are the future dates: November 13, 11/20, 12/4, 12/18, 2/5, 2/19, 3/5, 3/19, 4/2, 4/16, 5/7 and 5/21.

Today in literacy we made "at" bats. These should make their way home today.

Thursday we go to the Chandler to see the play. The bus will leave just after 9:00. If children could have a quick snack to eat at 9, that will be our only opportunity for a snack before lunch. Thanks! Beth

November 8

We had a wonderful day in kindergarten. This morning we practiced our audience skills by watching a performance by some 5th graders. At lunch time we had our first tour of the the addition to our building. We saw the classroom that we will be in after the holiday break.

November 7

We are embracing our surroundings! The kindergarten students have been learning about construction through literacy, and now we are studying it through math and engineering! The students are using blocks to build with. They are constructing houses, movie theaters, race tracks, even a zip line! The students are starting to draw the different shapes they see and notice the attributes that the shapes share or that make the shape different from another. For example they drew squares and rectangles to compare attributes. They noticed both have 4 sides and 4 corners but their sides looked different. We will continue to examine shapes and move into drawing what they build.
