Kindergarten/First Grade Team Teaching Loop

Our kindergarten class works as one team. Mrs. Gariboldi is the lead math/science teacher and Mrs. Parker is the lead literacy teacher. We both have a passion for working with young children and creating an environment that encourages cooperation. It is our goal to have children become life long learners!

October 31

Well, today is officially the last day of October ! We can't believe it! The days just fly by! We are looking forward to our parent conferences. There are so many success stories to share! Lisa will be sending home conference confirmations in Friday folders. Thank you!

We have had a child in our class diagnosed with strep. We are attaching some helpful information from our School nurse.

Health Update:

Strep Throat vs. Sore Throat

We’ve had a few of cases of Strep diagnosed over the last week in the school. Here’s some info to help you distinguish between Strep and viral Sore throats:

Not all sore throats are strep throats. Most episodes of sore throat are caused by viruses and usually clear up on their own without medical treatment. It is harder to know when you have strep throat. Generally, a viral infection and not strep bacteria cause sore throats. The more cold symptoms you have, the less likely it is that your sore throat is a strep infection Strep throat usually does not occur with cold symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, or a runny or stuffy nose.

Call your doctor if your child has any of these signs and symptoms and you are concerned that it is not a viral illness:

• A sore throat without cold symptoms

• lower stomach pain, loss of appetite or nausea

• general discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling

• A sore throat accompanied by tender, swollen lymph glands

• A fever higher than 101 F (38 C) in older children, or any fever lasting longer than 48 hours. All strep infections are not accompanied by fever.

• Rash. In some cases of strep infection, a rough rash develops and spreads over the neck and chest and eventually over the whole body. This condition is called scarlet fever and is treated with antibiotics. This usually leads to a quick recovery and is not dangerous if treated.

Strep throat usually requires treatment with antibiotics - along with plenty of rest and fluids, a child should be back to school and play within a few days.

October 30 2013

We had a great afternoon full of outdoor fun! During our ECO session we heard a wonderful story about a tiger and a mouse, you should ask your child about it! After our story and snack the kids went to their quiet spots in the forest to start building mouse houses. These are houses constructed from items in nature. Some students used sticks, moss, leaves, pine cones, pine needles and ferns. They started to think about what would help the mouse stay warm and cozy as the winter approaches. Before we finished we added a bit of bird seed to each house. I wonder if the seeds will still be there the next time we go out? Today was the start of a great project! The students also spent some time writing in their journals. They drew pictures of their mouse houses and will continue to add details to these pictures as they change their structures or as they notice changes that occur naturally!

Picture perfect!

Today we read a story called Creak, Said the Bed. We began noticing how dialog and sounds make the characters and story come to life. We took a walk outside to view the construction. We listened and watched. Inside we became story tellers. We shared our stories about the construction with a classmate.

October 18 5th grade buddies

Today we had a great time playing math games with our 5th grade buddies. We played a compare game to determine who had the greatest number and we played Go Fish to reinforce numeral recognition. Our buddies were so amazing! They helped us with these skills and we had so much fun! Thank you buddies!

ECO October 16th

We had a fabulous time during our ECO session this week. Amy, our ECO leader, told a wonderful story about a tricky coyote who stole all the colors of the world! Our job was to go into the forest and gather as many colors as we could to protect them from the trickster! The kids were using their "owl eyes" to search and locate as many colors as possible. It was awesome!

During ECO this student said, "I sat here, and I sat here before but I never noticed this green!" ( He was talking about the green on the tree) The students really start to notice and observe all that is around them!

During ECO the kids have each found their own quiet spot where they go to reflect, draw and write in their special ECO journals.

Today we went outside to our quiet spots in the forest and worked on our journals. The students used their eagle eyes, and deer ears to help them draw what their quiet spot looks like.

Today during math we played a new game! You should ask your child about it!

October 9

Today during math we played a roll and record game. The purpose was to practice number writing. They are really starting to blossom in this area. They also had a special guest come visit them. Her name was Miss Count. Boy, Miss Count has a tough time counting objects accurately! We have officially been in school for 31 days and the children have learned about making groups of ten. They made 3 groups of ten sticks and added one more to make 31. We also went to the forest today to see if we could locate our quiet spots from last week. We made observations about our own special spots and will be journaling about those spots tomorrow. In literacy we read Miss Rumphius, one of our favorite stories! We made connections to our three cares. This afternoon we went outside to plant lupine seeds, just like Miss Rumphius, to make the world more beautiful!
